길을 걷다 보면 전깃줄 위에 줄지어 앉아 있는 새들을 자주 보게 됩니다. 심지어 바람이 세게 불거나, 전깃줄이 살짝 흔들려도 떨어지지 않는 모습을 보면 참 신기하죠. 더 놀라운 건, 감전되지도 않고 편안하게 휴식까지 한다는 겁니다.

그 비밀은 전기가 흐르는 ‘경로’에 있습니다. 전기는 높은 전압에서 낮은 전압으로 흐르는데, 새는 전깃줄 위에서 양 발이 같은 선을 잡고 있어 전압 차를 느끼지 못합니다. 쉽게 말해, 전기가 지나갈 다른 길이 없으니 새 몸을 거쳐 흐르지 않는 거죠.

물론 모든 상황이 안전한 건 아닙니다. 만약 새가 전깃줄과 전봇대 같은 다른 물체를 동시에 건드린다면, 그 순간 전기가 몸을 통과하게 됩니다. 그래서 새들은 본능적으로 안전한 ‘한 줄 위’에서만 놀고 있는 셈입니다.
