Scientifically, this is called “mirror self-recognition,” and only a few animals—like humans, chimpanzees, dolphins, and magpies—have shown this ability. Dogs rely more on smell than sight to understand the world. Since the mirror has no scent, the image doesn’t register as “me” in their brain. So, to a dog, the reflection is just another random dog.
