가끔 고양이가 방 한켠에서 가만히 벽만 바라보고 있을 때가 있어요. 처음 보면 “귀신 본 거 아냐?”라는 생각이 드는데, 의외로 꽤 흔한 행동이래요. 사실 고양이는 사람보다 훨씬 민감한 청각과 시각을 갖고 있어서, 우리 눈에 안 보이거나 귀에 안 들리는 아주 미세한 움직임이나 소리를 감지할 수 있대요. 예를 들어 벽 뒤에 지나가는 배관 속 물소리나 아주 작은 벌레의 움직임 같은 거요.

또 어떤 고양이들은 그냥 멍 때리는 걸 즐긴다고 해요. 사람도 아무 생각 없이 허공을 볼 때가 있잖아요. 고양이도 그럴 수 있는 거죠. 물론 고양이가 너무 자주 그런 행동을 반복하거나, 경직된 자세로 장시간 계속한다면 건강 이상 신호일 수도 있으니 한 번쯤 체크해보는 게 좋아요.

Sometimes, you’ll find your cat just staring at a wall, totally zoned out. The first thing that might come to mind is, “Are they seeing a ghost?”—but this is actually a common behavior. Cats have much more sensitive hearing and sight than humans, so they might be picking up on tiny movements or sounds we can't detect—like water running through pipes or the crawl of a tiny insect behind the wall.

Some cats also just enjoy zoning out, the way people sometimes stare into space without really thinking. It’s their version of daydreaming. Of course, if your cat is doing it excessively or seems tense while doing so, it might be worth checking in with a vet just in case.
