여름밤에 창문을 열어두면 어김없이 날아드는 날벌레들. 가로등 불빛, 집 안의 형광등, 핸드폰 화면까지… 왜 벌레들은 이렇게 불빛에 집착하는 걸까요? 사실 이건 벌레들이 ‘불빛을 좋아해서’라기보다는, 혼란스러워서 그런 거예요. 많은 곤충들은 달빛이나 별빛을 기준 삼아 방향을 잡는데, 인공 조명이 그걸 방해해버리죠.

특히 나방 같은 곤충들은 일정 각도로 빛을 유지하면서 날아다니는 습성이 있는데, 인공조명은 너무 가까워서 방향 감각이 뒤죽박죽 돼요. 결국 빙글빙글 돌다 빛에 부딪히는 거죠. 우리 눈엔 ‘불나방’처럼 보이지만, 얘네 입장에선 GPS 오류 난 거나 마찬가지예요. 생각해보면 좀 짠하죠?

Take moths for example—they try to maintain a steady angle to a light source while flying. But artificial lights are too close, so they end up spiraling and bumping into the light. To us, they seem obsessed, but to them, it's like their GPS just glitched out. Kind of makes you feel a little bad for them, doesn't it?
